In the heart of the arid and salty desert lies a Zionist
settlement, to which it is said:

“If you plant seeds they will
burn, and what doesn’t burn,

will not germinate,

And those that germinate will
not grow,

And what does grow, will not
produce fruit,

And if there is fruit it will be
salty”.

Despite this, man has lived here since the beginning of
civilization. On Kibbutz Almog they manage to grow a variety of agricultural
products, each one has its own unique story, using ingenuity, persistence and
hard work that has allowed men to discover some of the mysteries of life in the
heart of the barren and waterless desert.

Tour of the Date Groves

“Palm head on fire with his feet in the water”

Dates have been grown in this area for hundreds of years,
dating back to biblical times; Josephus Flavius mentions them in his writings
of the times.

The original species of date palm had almost completely
disappeared from the area at the beginning of the 19th century, on
our tour we will hear some of the fascinating stories of the pioneering date
farmers who travelled far and wide looking for the perfect date seed to grow in
our unique conditions.

Today in Almog, we grow two kinds of date, Magoul and Dekel
Noor.

Tour of the Fields of Almog – Seasonal

Almog grows a variety of field crops according to season,
Bell Peppers, Aubergines, onions and watermelon. In the scriptures it is mentioned “if a man is
just one meter from the Dead Sea and he ploughs the earth and plants seeds, they
will not grow, the air is salty and the earth is saltier still. The pioneers of the Dead Sea discovered and
understood that it is possible to cultivate the earth around the Dead Sea, by first irrigating the earth with sweet
water before seeding.

Almogs Dairy Herd

On this barren landscape, Kibbutz Almog is home to a herd of
400 dairy cows, but with the Introduction of new and specialized technologies that
enable the cows to survive the harsh climate and still produce milk that is
rich, not at all reflecting the harsh weather conditions that are experienced
during the summer months. The method of
milking has been modified to suit the strict law of kashrut so that the dairy is
Kosher Le’Mehardrin.

COME LET US EXPLORE THE LAND OF SALT, HOME OF KINGS, REBELLIONS,AND SPECTACULAR
PANORAMAS, AT THE LOWEST PLACE ON EARTH!

PRICE $7+VAT. Groups of 15 and upward.

7 wonders of nature competition !

The Dead Sea, the lowest place on earth is one of the 28 finalists in the New 7 Wonders Of Nature, an international online competition to grade the seven eonders of the world.

Unique elements of nature

Minus 400- the only place on the globe where the crust of planet earth recedes to an “in-depth low” of minus 416 meters below sea level.

Sun- 330 days a year of sun that caresses sunbathers through atmospheric filters with the least chance of sun-burning.

Air- the air is miraculously dry, unpolluted, pollen-free, the air that purifies respiratory systems also filters and softens solar radiation.

Water & Springs- the living dead sea is the only un-drownable lake on earth.

travellers fron afar make the disrance just for the sensation of reclining into its salty water, floating in an armchair reading position and leaving the worries of the world behind them.

The spectacular En Gedi Nature Reserve, just west of the Dead Sea shore, is blessed with two year-round streams, the David Stream in the north and the Arugot Stream in the south. The four springs in the reserve, originating in rainfall in the Judean Mountains, have a total flow-rate of some 3 million cubic meters of water per year.

The combination of En Gedi’s location and its fresh water sources allow a wide variety of plant and animal species to thrive side by side. Flora include the acacia, the Christ-thorn and the Sodom apple, alongside streambed vegetation like giant reed and cattail, while the cliff walls are home to various types of moss and ferns, like maidenhair.

Among the mammals in En Gedi are herds of ibex and groups of hyrax, which visitors can meet close at hand. Nocturnal animals include foxes, wolves, hyenas, and even the occasional spotted leopard.

Many remnants of human settlement have been found in the reserve, including a temple going back to the Chalcolithic period (5,000 years before the present).
A Jewish settlement existed at En Gedi for more than 1,200 years, beginning in the seventh century BCE. In the third century, they build a synagogue whose beautiful mosaic floor is a highlight of the visit to En Gedi. The remains of components of ancient irrigation systems show how the inhabitants

used the fresh water to irrigate their cultivated terraces. Ancient En Gedi was famous for its dates and for balsam, a plant from which a costly perfume was produced.

The reserve offers a number of trails, from easy ones to those for experienced hikers.
The three main trails in the En Gedi Stream
The lower David Stream (easy): The trail passes waterfalls and pools, and leads up to the beautiful David Waterfall. Along the way are trees typical to the reserve, among them acacias, Christ-thorn and Egyptian balsam.

The Upper David Trail (for experienced hikers): The trail begins at the David Stream and continues up the slope to the Shulamit Spring, the karstic Dodim Cave at the top of the David Waterfall, and the En Gedi Spring. The trail also takes in the Chalcolithic temple and other antiquities.

The Tsafit trail to the dry Window Waterfall and canyon, the En Gedi Spring and the lower David Stream (for experienced hikers): This trail follows the seam between the arid part of the reserve and the oasis. It begins at the En Gedi Field Study Center and continues along the northern bank of the David Stream, descends to the dry Window Waterfall, framing a wonderful view of the David Stream, the Dead Sea and the Mountains of Moab, and finally crosses to the southern bank of the stream to the En Gedi Spring, ending at the lower En Gedi Stream.

The walk to the Arugot Stream, one of the largest in the Judean Desert, crosses an untamed landscape with year-round flowing water. The trail leads to the Hidden Waterfall and back, or to the upper pools and back.

Three trails in the reserve are for very experienced hikers. They ascend to the desert plateau, with spectacular views of the Dead Sea, the desert to the west and the Mountains of Moab to the east. The En Gedi Ascent (HaTsits Ascent) and the Isi’im Ascent are actually ancient trails.

Ascent from the Field School to Mount Yishai: A hike through the desert plateau to the En Gedi lookout, and via the En Gedi Ascent to the lower David Stream, ending in the David Stream reserve.

Ascent from Tel Goren to the En Gedi Spring: From the spring, the trail continues up the En Gedi Ascent to the lookout at the top. It continues along the desert plateau to the top of the Bne HaMoshavim Ascent and back down to the Arugot Stream, ending at the cashier’s booth of the Arugot Stream reserve.

From Kibbutz En Gedi to the desert plateau via the Tsruya Ascent: A hike from the desert plateau to the top of the Isi’im Ascent and back down to the Arugot Stream, ending at the cashier’s booth of the Arugot Stream reserve.

Visitors should ask the rangers in the cashier’s booth for specifics before taking any of these trails.
How to get there:
The reserve is located off the Dead Sea road (no. 90) about one kilometer north of Kibbutz En Gedi. approximately a 40-minute ride from kibbutz Almog

“Our prospects at Ain Feshkhah seemed as bright as at Jericho, and we were already prepared to pronounce the Dead Sea shore to be the shore of charmed life. Water, vegetation, birds and beasts, geology and hot baths – everything was in abundance.”

–– Henry Baker Tristram, The Land of Israel: A Journal of Travels in Palestine, 1866.

, Enot Tsukim or En Fashkha, as it is also known (Fashkha means split or broken), is the lowest nature reserve in the world and one of the most beautiful in Israel. This oasis of green lies between the brownish barren fault scarp to the west and the blue Dead Sea. Enot Tsukim is divided into three areas: the northern “closed reserve,” the central “visitors reserve,” and the southern “hidden reserve.”

The northern part is completely closed to visitors, except for scientists, who enter rarely at the invitation of the INPA to ensure no harm comes to it. There, nature is allowed to have the last word without human intervention. It is approximately 2,700 dunams (675 acres) in size. The approximately 500-dunam central section contains wading and swimming pools filled by natural spring water, where visitors can enjoy the water and have access to shade, toilets, picnic tables surrounded by greenery.

This part of the reserve also contains the archaeological site from the Second Temple period. It was excavated for the first time from 1955 to 1957 by the French archaeologist Roland de Vaux, the excavator of nearby Qumran. De Vaux linked the two sites, positing that Enot Tsukim was a farm where Essenes raised crops and animals. Professor Yizhar Hirschfeld of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem completed his excavation in 2000, discovering a large complex from the Herodian period, including a manor house, irrigation pool, garden and a large installation, unique in the country where balsam perfume may have been produced.
The 1,500-dunam southern part of the reserve, the “hidden reserve” may be visited only on tours guided by INPA guides, so as both to protect nature and at the same time allow visitors to enjoy it. Guided tours must be reserved in advance.
How to get there:
The Einot Tsukim reserve is located on the northern Dead Sea coast along road 90,
approximately a 20-minute ride from kibbutz Almog

The uncovering of the remains of the settlement of Qumran, on the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea, and the Dead Sea Scrolls found nearby, ignited the imagination of both Jews and Christians. In addition to the oldest copies of the Hebrew Scriptures ever found and scrolls pertaining to the ancient community known as the Yahad, numerous other objects depict the daily life and way of thinking of the Qumran’s inhabitants. Scholars believe that no more than 200 people lived at the site, but the impact of their ideas far exceeded their numbers.

Some of Jesus’ pronouncements as recorded in the New Testament had similarities to expressions in the scrolls, Paul quotes scrolls written at Qumran, and the Gospel of John also reveals a link to the sect. A specific prayer recited at specific times of day is a custom the Jewish sages adopted from the Qumran sect after the destruction of the Second Temple.

The people at Qumran were apparently Essenes, a group that was known even before the 1947 discovery of the Scrolls from the writings of the contemporaneous historian Josephus Flavius. The members of the sect saw themselves as the chosen of Israel, whose ways the rest of the people should follow. Their separatist nature led them to the desert, although groups also lived in separate communities in cities, including Jerusalem.

Historians of the period describe the group as abandoning the world’s pleasures and living as a commune to which they donated all their wealth. In fact, the sect disparaged wealth; perhaps this was the source of their opposition to the aristocratic Hasmoneans.

Their writings describe a communal meal prepared by their priests and consumed in a sacred atmosphere; scholars say the meal might have replaced sacrifice in the Temple, in which they did not believe. They are described as celibate, although based on skeletal evidence uncovered in the cemetery at Qumran, women also live there. Although seemingly pacifistic in nature, they believed they were preparing for a great, final war in which the world would be destroyed, and that they were readying for a social revolution whose seeds they had planted.
Their world view states that everything has been pre-ordained by God. One of their central tenets is that the world is divided into two camps – the righteous and the evil. However, their belief in pre-destination did not lead them to indifference. They believed that a person could do evil because God allowed free will. The members of the sect therefore worked hard to prove their righteousness at all times.

Although they did not follow Jewish law of their time (and even had a different calendar), their observance of the Sabbath was meticulous in the extreme. Josephus writes that they did not even defecate on the Sabbath to avoid impurity.

Their daily routine, as revealed in their writings, involved rising at dawn and gathering for common prayer. Afterward they worked––cultivating dates, raising sheep and goats or serving the community by drawing water, preparing food,
and other tasks. In the afternoon they gathered again, immersed themselves in a ritual bath, prayed again and shared a simple common meal. At sunset they would pray once more. Each member was required to devote one-third of the night to study of the Scriptures.

Qumran was established in the eighth century BCE and continued in existence until the destruction of the Temple in 586 BCE. The rectangular fortress dates from this early period. The site was abandoned and resettled in the second century BCE, when it was called Secaca. The name Qumran, which comes from the Arabic word meaning “crescent moon” was given the site during the Arab period. Coins found there from the period of the Bar Kokhba Revolt (132–135 CE) reveal that some of the fighters found shelter in its ruins.
How to get there:
From the road along the Dead Sea (no. 90), turn to Kibbutz Kalia. The park is approximately a 10-minute ride from kibbutz Almog
