Agricultural tour of the dead sea
In the heart of the arid and salty desert lies a Zionist
settlement, to which it is said:
“If you plant seeds they will
burn, and what doesn’t burn,
will not germinate,
And those that germinate will
And what does grow, will not
And if there is fruit it will be
Despite this, man has lived here since the beginning of
civilization. On Kibbutz Almog they manage to grow a variety of agricultural
products, each one has its own unique story, using ingenuity, persistence and
hard work that has allowed men to discover some of the mysteries of life in the
heart of the barren and waterless desert.
Tour of the Date Groves

Dates have been grown in this area for hundreds of years,
dating back to biblical times; Josephus Flavius mentions them in his writings
of the times.
The original species of date palm had almost completely
disappeared from the area at the beginning of the 19th century, on
our tour we will hear some of the fascinating stories of the pioneering date
farmers who travelled far and wide looking for the perfect date seed to grow in
our unique conditions.
Today in Almog, we grow two kinds of date, Magoul and Dekel
Tour of the Fields of Almog – Seasonal
Almog grows a variety of field crops according to season,
Bell Peppers, Aubergines, onions and watermelon. In the scriptures it is mentioned “if a man is
just one meter from the Dead Sea and he ploughs the earth and plants seeds, they
will not grow, the air is salty and the earth is saltier still. The pioneers of the Dead Sea discovered and
understood that it is possible to cultivate the earth around the Dead Sea, by first irrigating the earth with sweet
water before seeding.
Almogs Dairy Herd
On this barren landscape, Kibbutz Almog is home to a herd of
400 dairy cows, but with the Introduction of new and specialized technologies that
enable the cows to survive the harsh climate and still produce milk that is
rich, not at all reflecting the harsh weather conditions that are experienced
during the summer months. The method of
milking has been modified to suit the strict law of kashrut so that the dairy is
